I GAVE UP ON LOVE | Story Behind the Song

There comes a point in life when you stop chasing love.

Not because you’ve sworn it off.

Because you’re tired.

If you’d rather watch, here’s the full lyric video.

Turns out love doesn’t always listen when you say you’re done.

“I Gave Up on Love” came from that place.

Not dramatic. Not bitter. Just done trying to manufacture something that wouldn’t stick.

The lyric says:

“I gave up on love, but love didn’t leave me.
I said I’m not searching anymore, but it didn’t believe me.”

That line makes me smile a little.

Because it’s true.

You can declare you’re finished. Life sometimes ignores you.

In the bridge there’s this line:

“But I wouldn’t settle for just another guy.”

That wasn’t about being picky.

It was about being clear.

There’s a difference.

Michael Creber and I wrote it years ago. We recorded it once. The first version had that old jazz bar feel. Midnight. Piano player smoking. Ash hanging on for dear life. It sounded great But something wasn’t quite right.

So I went back into the studio in Calgary with Steve Dawson and his band and cut it again.

This version leans a little 50s. Warm. Steady. No chasing.

Sometimes a song needs to age a bit before it sounds like itself.

The third verse says:

“Time passed me by, but now it’s standing still.
I have love.”

That shift matters to me.

Not because it’s a fairy tale.

Because it feels settled.

There’s something about stepping back and saying, I’m not running after this anymore.

And then… life shifts.
